After more than 25 years in the nonprofit sector—and over 15 years as a major gift fundraiser within a large university system—I’ve recently begun an exciting new chapter in my work: transitioning from full-time university fundraising to consulting with small nonprofits.
While my professional environment has shifted, my purpose has not. I remain deeply committed to helping mission-driven organizations create meaningful, lasting impact—especially those working closest to their communities.
Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of leading major fundraising initiatives, cultivating long-term donor relationships, and helping organizations align their missions with effective resource development strategies. Along the way, I developed deep expertise in strategic planning, relationship management, and sustainable fundraising models.
Over time, however, I found myself increasingly drawn to the work happening at the grassroots level. I saw small nonprofits doing extraordinary things with limited resources—often fueled by passion, innovation, and deep community trust, but stretched thin by capacity constraints. I began to ask myself where my skills could make the greatest difference. The answer kept pointing in the same direction.
Why small nonprofits?
Small nonprofits are often the most nimble and innovative organizations in our sector. They are embedded in their communities and uniquely positioned to respond to urgent, local needs. Yet despite their critical role, many lack access to the tools, guidance, and strategic support needed to grow sustainably and maximize their impact.
My goal now is to serve as a catalyst for these organizations—helping them strengthen fundraising capacity, build strategic partnerships, and tell compelling stories that inspire action. I believe every small nonprofit has tremendous potential when supported thoughtfully, and that investing in their success creates ripple effects that strengthen entire communities.
This transition is more than a career pivot; it’s a commitment. In a time marked by increasing challenges and uncertainty, collective effort and bold, strategic action matter more than ever. By sharing my experience and supporting small nonprofits where they are, I hope to contribute to meaningful, community-driven change—and ultimately, to a more resilient and equitable future.
A question to continue the conversation
In your experience, what innovative strategies can small nonprofits adopt to overcome resource limitations and maximize their impact? Here are a few approaches I’ve seen work well:
- Leverage technology and digital tools
Affordable or free platforms—such as social media, email marketing tools, and project management systems like Trello or Asana—can dramatically extend reach and efficiency without significant cost. - Build strategic partnerships
Collaborations with local businesses, peer nonprofits, and community organizations can unlock shared resources, co-hosted events, and joint fundraising opportunities. - Center storytelling in fundraising efforts
Authentic stories shared through social media, short videos, and digital campaigns help donors connect emotionally to impact. Crowdfunding platforms can also support focused, project-based fundraising. - Engage volunteers and community champions
Empowering volunteers as ambassadors builds community ownership, extends capacity, and deepens mission alignment. - Prioritize high-impact programs
When resources are limited, focus matters. Using data alongside stories helps organizations refine efforts and clearly demonstrate impact. - Diversify funding streams
Exploring membership models, micro-donations, social enterprise ideas, or earned revenue can reduce over-reliance on traditional funding sources. - Invest in capacity building and peer learning
Training, webinars, and peer networks foster shared learning and collective resilience across the sector. - Optimize operations and use data wisely
Streamlining internal processes saves time and energy—allowing organizations to focus on what matters most.
I’m eager to collaborate with passionate organizations committed to making a difference and to be part of a growing movement that empowers communities to thrive—even in challenging times.
